The Cast Fireplace surround in cast iron was for use

as a decorative surround and it generally had an insert

or a dog grate within in giving it a very decorative look for the main rooms in the house.

Nowadays we use it in the same way or with a stove inside which certainly looks the part.

Depending on what you put inside it - it will burn solid fuel, gas effect or simply decorative

The Cast Iron Fire Surround was first manufactured around the late 1700 to 1800's making it Georgian,

Victorian and then later Edwardian.

Generally they were a decorative item for the main reception rooms of the property like the Lounge,

Dinning room, and what was known as the parlour or morning room.

This would be the outer fireplace with an inner fire known as the insert tiled or arched where the fire would be lit.

The fire surround was always very elegant with impressive proportions and often a wealth of detailed embellishment to add grace

and refinement to any larger room -

simply timeless elegance

If you wish to see any cast iron surround displayed with any insert please do not hesitate - pictures are for illustration purposes and can be changed ie tiles, insert, arches etc. please contact 0161 477 8980

Hearth - the most popular hearth at the moment is a natural black slate hearth as it matches the overall image and is very plain. Here, at Strippadoor, we can cut slate to your exact dimensions for various uses i.e. * solid fuel (coal / logs) or for use with a gas effect or simply decorative.

Generally the hearth is pretty much the same overall width as the mantle - for instance here the mantle is 41" long so the hearth would be the same at 41", and with a depth of around 15" this makes a perfect image. Strippadoor puts a extra T onto the back of the hearth to go into the first part of the hole making a much better image from the front.

The price for the above for decorative is £ 195 plus vat - for gas effect the hearth needs to be raised - we call this plinthing and this is an extra £38 plus vat and finally for *solid fuel the hearth, to meet the HETAS regulation, needs to be cut into three to reduce any change of cracking then put back together using steel wires with a lighter concrete base inside - this is quite a lot of additional work but essential so the added price to the £ 195 here is a further 78 making a total of £270 plus vat.

Please note we can cut to any size but the base price of the hearth will both reduce if smaller and increase if larger

Other hearths available - tiled hearth, granite hearths at an additional cost

Gas Effects are available for the majority of the fires at a cost of approx. £ 255 - £ 380 plus vat subject to whether they have to be template made or are standard. Please note you will need an ash pan front cover to hide the workings of the gas effect underneath - more often than not these are within the price of the fireplace however if there is not one on the picture then this is an additional to order of around £ 25 - £ 35
